Nestled amid nature reserves and acres of agricultural land in northern San Diego County, Valley Center is a rural community that’s in the throes of transition. Two large casinos opened here between 2001 and 2002, and this is changing the character of the land into a semi-rural one. But the community strives to maintain its country nature and small town charm, allowing residents to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Living in Valley Center

The two casinos in Valley Center – Harrah’s Resort Southern California and Valley View Casino – are among the largest in San Diego. They not only offer a host of entertainment options to residents and visitors; they also provide numerous job opportunities for the locals.  Once considered a remote agricultural community, Valley Center is seeing some urbanization coming on the heels of the casinos’ opening. Housing developments have been rising in the area, particularly gated communities with customizable homes.  However, the village remains largely agricultural, with farms and ranches still dominating the townscape. While many visitors come for the casino, a good number also visit the village to retreat into the tranquility of the countryside. Valley Center has the only USDA-certified organic lavender farm in San Diego – the Keys Creek Lavender Farm. The farm sells lavender-based wellness products, and during harvest time in the summer, it opens its doors for lavender picking and other activities.  Bates Nut Farm is also a popular destination in Valley Center. Founded in 1921, this family-owned farm boasts a charming dried fruits and nuts store, and is the venue for many local events, such as craft fairs, car shows, music festivals, and more.  The most anticipated event in the community is Valley Center Western Days, a week-long event featuring stampede rodeos, musical performances, a carnival, and more.
