The City of San Marcos has everything you need for the perfect family-friendly community – great location, highly rated schools, welcoming neighborhoods, and abundant open spaces. The city is only  15 miles to Carlsbad and Encinitas, and only 36 miles to Downtown San Diego. While not oceanfront, San Marcos boasts its own body of water in Lake San Marcos, where you can enjoy fishing, boating, and lakeside shopping and dining. If your preference is the ocean, the beaches of Carlsbad and Encinitas are just a short drive away.  There are around 29 parks, 60 miles of trails, and 11 recreation centers in the city. Jack’s Pond Nature Center is a local favorite for outdoor recreation. This 23-acre park features interpretive hikes and interactive activities, as well as a playground and picnic areas. Discovery Lake is another popular neighborhood hub, boasting facilities such as a splash pad, hiking trails, picnic tables, and play equipment.  The area is served by the San Marcos Unified School District, which includes a number of highly rated schools, such as Paloma Elementary School, Discovery Elementary School, Double Peak Elementary, San Marcos High School, and more.  The city is also home to California State University San Marcos and Palomar College, giving adults plenty of convenient opportunities for higher education. These institutions are also two of the biggest employers in the city, along with San Marcos Unified School District.
