Mira Mesa’s fast, unplanned development in the late 1960s led to a shortage of schools, grocery shops, and other amenities essential to a good quality of life. Not anymore. Over the years, this San Diego neighborhood has caught up with the needs of its residents – and more.  There are several shopping centers in the village, including Mira Mesa Marketplace, Village at Mira Mesa, and Mira Mesa Shopping Center, which is anchored by a Target store.  The community is served by the Mira Mesa Cluster School Council of the San Diego Unified School District. The council oversees seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school, many of which are highly rated by Niche.com. The community college San Diego Miramar College is also found in Mira Mesa. There are numerous parks in the village, including Mira Mesa Recreation Center and Hourglass Field Community Park and Field House. The San Diego Ice Arena is also located here.  For more outdoor recreation, the stunning Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve located just northwest of Mira Mesa offers plenty of opportunities for hiking and bird and wildlife watching.  Each year, the community holds highly anticipated events, such as the San Diego Tet Festival, an annual celebration of Vietnamese New Year organized by the local Vietnamese community. Other major community events include the Mira Mesa State Fair and the Mira Mesa Festival of Beers.
