Del Mar first rose to fame in the 1930s with the opening of the Del Mar Racetrack, which was founded by the Thoroughbred Club led by Bing Crosby. The site of legendary horse races, Del Mar Racetrack continues to host the well-attended Del Mar Horse Races every summer, as well as other regular events. Del Mar Racetrack is found on the grounds of the 370-acre Del Mar Fairgrounds, which is also the venue for the San Diego County Fair, an event attended by over 1.5 million visitors annually. Del Mar consistently draws in more than two million visitors every year, who come not only for the city’s popular events but also for the stunning beaches, gorgeous views, topnotch shopping and dining, and outdoor attractions. Over the years, the city has retained its quaint small town charm that adds to its distinct character.  A number of upscale hotels can be found in the city, as well as highly rated restaurants, many of which have oceanfront locations. Some of the best restaurants to visit include Jake’s Del Mar, Addison, and Market Restaurant + Bar.  Luxury shopping is also the norm here. Downtown Del Mar Village is the top retail destination, featuring a walkable design, unique boutiques, five-star restaurants, and cozy coffee shops.
